Is skype blocked in China?

Microsoft’s Skype application for Android and iOS has been expelled from various application stores in China for right around a month. The New York Times reports that Skype has been expelled because of nearby laws that apply to VoIP benefits in China. “We have been advised by the Ministry of Public Security that various voice over web convention applications don’t consent to neighborhood law,” says an Apple representative in an announcement to the NYT. “In this way these applications have been expelled from the application store in China.”

While Google’s legitimate Play Store doesn’t work in China, other outsider Android application administrations have likewise evacuated Skype. It’s not clear to what extent Skype will stay hindered from these application stores, yet a Microsoft representative tells the NYT that Skype has been.

The Skype expulsion comes a very long time after China began blocking WhatsApp. Different administrations like Gmail, Facebook, and Twitter are altogether obstructed by Chinese government channels.

App store operators like Apple have also felt the squeeze. In July, Apple removed software from its app store that allows users to bypass the Great Firewall. Last December, authorities had Apple (AAPL, Tech30) pull New York Times news apps from the App Store in China, after blocking the U.S. publication’s English and Chinese websites for the better part of five years.

Apple has come under fire for repeatedly complying with authorities’ requests, with critics accusing the company of aiding China’s censorship efforts.
